Why does your skin feel tight after a shower?

A tight, dry feeling after a shower is common, and it usually comes down to habits you can change: water that is too hot, a shower that is too long, a heavily foaming product, or a rinse that was rushed. Here is what to look at, in order.

1. The water is too hot

Very hot water feels good, but it is a common reason skin feels tight and dry afterwards. Warm does the same job of washing you. Hot just feels like it is working harder.

2. The shower is too long

A long shower keeps skin wet and warm for longer than it needs to be. Most of us are done washing in a few minutes. Past that, it is mostly standing in water.

3. Too much product

More gel is not more clean. A small amount of a decent shower gel does the job. Using a lot just means more to rinse off.

4. A rushed rinse

Gel left on skin can leave it feeling tight and itchy. Rinse for longer than you think, then a few seconds more.

5. How you dry

Rubbing hard with the towel is rougher than it needs to be. Pat dry, and get into the folds and between your toes.
